Facts:
- Candidal infections are a very common type of invasive fungal infection
– up to 75% of women experience a vaginal candida infection.
- Most at risk of vulvovaginal candidiasis are women using antibiotics, poorly controlled diabetes, systemic immunosuppression or immunodeficiency.
Testing of Candida is important to establish the correct diagnosis, to ensure that Candida has not been mistaken for bacterial vaginosis. Once correctly diagnosed, the infection can then be effectively treated with the right remedy.
Symptoms may include:
- Vaginal and vulva discomfort – burning, itching, redness, swelling
- Pain when urinating, and during or after sexual intercourse
- If present, vaginal discharge may have cottage-cheese-like consistency or thick, whitish-grey colour.
